Think I may have just commited insurance fraud

Last policy was dealt with via broker. Last claim Oct 11 infromed broker who dealt with issue to completion. Recived a letter then from actual insurance company who advised me that I didn't inform them of last 2 claims. These were on dealt with via broker. So not too sure how they couldn't know. On trying to renew, the broker still didn't know about said claims .. !!!!!!.. and when I told them they then inform me that I will have to use another insurance compnay who may not insure us with accident. The quote was extortionate, so I go online fill out details and call a different company, disclosing all claims over 4 years telling them about the phone call with broker. They ask me a specific question " have you ever been refused or had a policy cancelled?" No I say - but have I? They then offer me cover and i pay for 1 yeard insurnace over the phone so now just waiting for the paperwork to come through. I am really worried now - have I unknowingly commited fraud? What can I do?

If you were refused cover because of your history that just meant the insurer didn't want you, and need not be of concern.

But if your policy was cancelled after it started and when they "found out" they had been misinformed about your history, then this could be a different matter.

Speak to your broker (who has some responsibility in all this) and see what the true situation is regarding the earlier refusal/cancellation. Then progress this from the reply - though your broker should sort this out for you!
  • My policy was never cancelled by the insurance company but when my renewal was due my broker looked through his database to get the best deal and when I again informed him of the claims again he stated that only 1 company would quote me at an extortinate rate. So I looked online, found a company who would quote me, made sure I gave them all the details of previous claims and they agreed to insure me. I have not spoken again to the broker as he was trying to see if the company who would quote me would give me a better deal, but in the meantime I found one myself and have taken out a policy with them. Not too sure what to do when the broker rings me back (and he will). Was my broker crap? Shall I just tell him I have found someone who will insure be based on all my disclosures.

Looks as though you have nothing to worry about at all.

You can tell your broker you got fixed up elsewhere.
