My dvd/rw no longer recognises cds

Options
Yesterday morning my dvd/rw drive worked perfectly well, reading and writing both dvds and cds using roxio. In the evening I tried to use it again and it will just not recognize a cd,neither retail or self burnt.Dvds are no problem. With a cd I can hear the drive spinning for a while and the "busy" light shows but then it stops.I have checked device manager and this says the device is working properly.I really need this to be working again, can anyone help please?

    Try this.
Right click on My Computer and select Properties, Hardware, Device Manager.
Expand the DVD drive list, right click on the drive and select Uninstall.

When this has finished, go to Control Panel and click Add Hardware.

    Then try Roxio again

Is it just Roxio. Have you tried other programs. What version of Roxio are you using?

Here are some other things to try courtesy of another site

Are the drives visible in windows ( my computer & device manager) ?

    Old version 6 notes.

    Using Roxio Assistant:

Roxio Assistant is designed to correct Engine Initialization errors. If Easy CD & DVD Creator's Engine does not initialize, the applications in Easy CD & DVD Creator will not recognize your recorder.

After running Roxio assistant, you should update Easy CD & DVD Creator as described above in "Updating Your Software to the Latest Version:".

    RoxAssist.exe is located at:
    C:\Program Files\Common Files\Roxio Shared\Upgrade\RoxAssist.exe
(Note: If you have modified the installation of Windows or Easy CD & DVD Creator, the file may be located in a different location.)

After running this program you should receive the message "Engine initialized successfully with full recorder support".

If you do not receive the message, update your Virus software and then check and clean your system for viruses. After the removal of any viruses, uninstall and then reinstall Easy CD & DVD Creator (use "Add Remove Programs" in "Control Panel".)

Roxio Assistant: In some instances Roxio Assistant may require the installation CD, not allowing you to "Cancel" with out it. In this case you will need to insert the Easy CD & DVD Creator install disc into your drive so that Roxio Assistant will have access to needed files.

I think if it won't see CD's from Explorer it is safe to rule out roxio as the cause.

Removal from device manager too, has been tried so its unlikely a driver issue.

Drives like these commonly have two lasers fitted. One for DVD's and one for CD's. Both rely on different frquencies so having a dual lasered drive enables either disk to be read.

This sounds a likely cause, especially if retail CD's will not be recognised. It is common for different makes of CD-R, CD-RW to be a bit hit and miss but this seems like nothing will be recognised.

    My moneys on the laser!

It's less than £20 for a nice new fast drive, and a simple upgrade for even a novice so its not all bad news.

No mention of the make/model of this combo drive. I have seen exactly the same symptoms on an LG GWA-4164B. What type is this one?

Just wondered if it was a common fault with a particular make/model of combo drive as I had not come across this before.
