Try putting a card in newsagents/corner shop windows etc. Also chip shops have adverts like this. I have found myself while queing up for my chip supper reading all the cards just to keep myself from getting bored.

Our local newspapers always have classified ads for gardening services, often 1 man bands. Leaflet through door is still popular way of advertising.
If you are querying your Council Tax band would you please state whether you are in England, Scotland or Wales

You can't expect results in 3 days. Most advertising campaigns work on repeat exposure which is quite costly

By yellow pages do you mean the book or the website? Take into acount more and more people use the internet to find local businesses where peopel can advertise on Yell, directory sites as well as the search engines.

Maybe some direct mail would work for you. I know many gardners who get at least half of their new business from word of mouth so it's all about getting yourself out there and networking. But who am I to tell you what to do! ;)

Yes, thanks for the advice guys. The advert was actually free and has resulted in me being online and a one line advert in their book next year - I think their delivery has already taken place this year.

Bit disappointed though - I've only got one call so far and my geographic area has nigh on 350K people in it. Am trying to think where else I could advertise a gardening business. Obviously I can and will do it door to door, but I know lots of people just throw their advertising in the bin and don't even look at it twice.
