Ryanair profiteering from tax hike?

I have a return flight from Stockholm to London and have just had £5.32 debited from my account to cover the tax rise. If they pull this stunt on every non-UK booking with a return to the UK then that's a lot of extra pennies in their coffers.

Worth pointing out to any authorities or just put up with it?

  • Well, the UK's Air Passenger Duty was increased from £5 to £10 as of 1 February 2007 so that would account for £5 of the extra charge but as for the other 32p, I don't know. Maybe something to do with Dynamic Currency Conversion?

The terms and conditions probably say that you give them permission to charge your card for any increase in Taxes, Fees and Charges.

They do and to be fair I don't have a problem with that. I'm more concerned with the loading of the currency rate in their favour. It's a fair bet that the 32p isn't getting passed on to Gordon. I would guess that they have to collect the tax for a few hundred thousand flights so it's quite a bit extra that will presumably end up in their profits.

If they took it from your debit card they will be charged a second transaction fee by your bank. They will probably claim the extra 32p is to cover the cost of the transaction. Whether that is fair or not is debatable.
