Visa Debit card will not work for online transactions

My Visa Debit card has stopped being authorised on all recent attempts to purchase things online.

- I have money in the account
- Everything was fine up until about two weeks ago
- HSBC say its not them and alls ok their end
- I can use it at ATM's and shops etc.
- HSBC are sending me a new card just in case.

If it isnt the card playing up what could it be???

Many thanks

    Security block.

Problems with the card failing the authorisation checks of the websites you are trying to use it on (address details etc).
  • I've had this on a credit card
Works on chip and pin OK etc
Works online - unless HSBC is the card processor the online merchant uses, then it doesn't work......every time HSBC have blocked it for some reason.

'tis the merchant's problem so far as I care, I'll just buy the product somewhere else.

Is the transaction (obviously) referring to Verified by Visa? If so, how do you respond?

Anything happen to your pc two weeks ago? Have you tried a different pc (that you trust)?

If you purchase on Amazon (which doesn't refer to VbV) does it work?

    Rare, but has happened ...

If you are in a country other than the country where the card was issued the transaction can be declined as possibly fraudulant as the website detects your location is, in their opinion, wrong.

If the website offers multiple currencies and you try to pay in a currency different to which the website wants you to use based on your location an/or country of issue of the card.

Your card has a history of disputing online transactions.

I have an amazon account which I pay with my credit card which works fine.

I am currently running two anti virus software (AVG/SOPHOS) checks to see if it finds anything.

I have tried it using a different PC with the same results.

I also signed up for free trial with Experian to check credit rating/history and it all come back good!

When I do a verfied by Visa I imput my password as prompted then it takes a while then fails!

Thanks for all your responses so far:)

As someone mentioned previously, your card has been blocked for online use.

With Santander for example, if someone else trys to make a purchase online with your card details and fails to enter the correct VbV password details it will fail authorisation and block your card.

A telephone number would have been displayed when VbV fails.
    Go to HSBC VbV site
    https://secure6.arcot.com/vpas/hsbcdebit/
    and call them
Alternatively you can call HSBC on 0845 606 3535 Lines are open between 8am and 10pm everyday (excluding Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Year's Day). Calls may be recorded for security and service improvement purposes.

I've had pretty back luck with my HSBC debit card too, I've had two new cards issued by HSBC themselves and calls from their fraud department saying they suspect fraudulent activity on my account. Even after insisting that it was in fact made by me they still send me a new card.

I do make transactions in other countries online and also use other countries, one time it was a payment to a company in Hong Kong, which I understand showing as fraudulent. However another was when I was paying my Capital One credit card off.
