New composite door glass breaks after four weeks!

Hey

Four weeks ago I had all my windows and a new composite front door with a middle glass partician fitted by a company called swainston windows limited. Last night the front door glass fell through after closing the door. It shattered on the floor on our drive!

After ringing the company they came out today with their boss. Their boss insisted this has never happened before and we would have to claim through our home insurance because someone must have tried to tamper with it and break in! Now he's took the glass part to get inspected to see if it was faulty. If it's not faulty we will be billed for several hundred pounds.

I honestly think he's trying to pull a fast one. We had originally paid them over £3000 for all the work they did four weeks ago. Surely they can't say it's our negligence?
Where do I stand with this?

Thanks

Ste

From my layman's knowledge, I thought all external doors (not sure what you mean by composite, UPVC or wood and metal combo maybe) have the glazing beads which hold the glass in against the frame, fitted on the inside to stop burglars taking the sealed unit out.

If that was the case, I can't see what you have described happening unless the sealed unit was faulty or too small and bodged in.

The glass is held in within a plastic mould (casing), can't remember what it's called. The outside casing fell out with the glass inside. The inside casing stayed in the door. It does sound like a faulty casing. If they say it isn't its my word against theirs.

    Thanks

In theory it's within 6 months so for him to prove it wasn't faulty, not for you to prove it was.
Maybe I'm not getting it, but why has he taken the glass part away for testing? There was nothing wrong with the glass part until it hit the floor, the problem is with the way it was held in place? If so then his report on the glass being fine would be worth nothing.

I would not pay any invoice sent to me at this stage.
