Calling all BMW experts!

Hi all,

I have a BMW 316i Compact (S reg) that I want to get back on the road. I've got a power steering pump that needs changing and it needs the belts and one pulley to be changed as well. I've been trying hard to locate a Haynes manual for this model but many of the ones I've seen exclude the Compact model. Is the manual for this model basically the same for most things or not?

It's an E36 Compact - The mechanicals are basically the same as the E36 "proper" BUT the rear suspension is different, most body panels etc are different. A Haynes manual for the E36 saloon with the same engine (1.8 8 vave?) should cover most stuff or at least point you in the right direction. It's the same engine and ancilliaries just in a different body package. Front end is almost identical mechanically, rear end as said is different with different suspesion layout, but that shouldn't concern you if you're working in the engine bay.

Its quite a straightforward job, but if there isn't a compact book, get an e36 manual.

Brill! Thanks chaps! I thought the engine would be the same so will buy that manual. I've got a mate who's handy in the engine department to change the belts and the pulley which seems much less straightforward to me! Thanks all
