I got a statement dated 20th March but my DD hasn't come out yet. Is it normal or should I chase them?
Oh, you wee bazza!

The DD collection isn't driven by your statement date, but by the payment due date.
When does the statement say they will collect the DD?0 -

Your DD for the previous month, presumably?
IIRC from one of your previous posts this is a new account???
If so, direct debits take a while to get set up, so you may have missed your first payment. Not a good sign. You'd better have a word with Vanquis. Their freefone number is 0800 7816314.0 -

You would hardly expect the direct debit to have been taken yet ... the statement was only issued last Tuesday, less than 1 week ago.
Does the statement not show the dd date? If not, and are sure a dd has been set up, you could assume the dd will be taken around the payment due date which will definately be shown on your statement.
If the statement makes no mention of dd and a dd has never previously been taken call Vanquis and check. The dd may not have been set up yet and you will have to make a manual payment.
Is this your first ever credit card?0 -

Why not? A colleague says to me she gets her statements on the 21st and her DD comes out a matter of days later.Does the statement not show the dd date? I have asked OH to check and its apparently set to come out on the 16th, which is also the due date. That to me rings alarm bells because if the DD failed or took longer for some reason it might be marked as a late payment? Why should a DD come out at the last minute and not a few days earlier, for instance.Your DD for the previous month, presumably?

Payment due is the 16th of April so I have plenty of time, no need to worry. This is my second statement. I am just asking because I want to check in plenty of time that this is going to work, but it appears that it says on the back of the statement (I feel a plonker now for not looking) that a DD is set for the 16th.
All this credit stuff is very new to me, and I'd rather be cautious than ruin my already non-existent credit report and really scupper my chances in the future.Oh, you wee bazza!0 -

It's not your problem. As long as you have the money in the bank, they can take it whenever they fancy, and if they forget, then it's their problem.0 -

I'm sorry to say she has misinformed you.
The most obvious reason why a dd is not taken immediately that a statement is produced is so that you are informed in advance of the amount of the direct debit and have time to make provision for it.
Let me give you an example of a personal experience from the late 1990's which will clarify this.
Amex started to progressively reduce the period between the statement date and the dd date on chargecard accounts from (I think) 21 days, to 14 days and then 7 days. At the same time they stopped sending the statements from Brighton and started sending them from Ft Laudedale (Florida) instead. I'm sure you can imagine what happened and the consequences of what happened. (Was told very unsympathetically by Amex that chargecard holders should not need to see a statement, they should know what they have spent and should not charge anything to the card that they do not already have the money sitting in their account to pay for ... hmmm)
There are of course other reasons as well. Imagine the dd was for full balance and you therefore paid in full every month and did not pay interest. By taking the dd before the payment due date, the cc company would be depriving you of the full interest free period to which you are entitled.0 -
It should also be noted that if you only get online statements to avoid the charge for paper then it makes no mention to say the DD is set up it just states what your payment date is, also if you make any ad hoc payments to the account that clear the minimum payment if you dont have a full DD set up to clear the balance then no DD will be taken.
