Of the dates mentioned only one of them, 31 May 2011, was actually the last day of the month.

Now how about giving us just a little clue as to which date the standing order is set up for to pay the rent?

How do/did you set up a Nationwide Standing Order for "last day of month"?

On my Nationwide current accounts (I have 4 of them, all looking the same for SOs) I can select a specific date, and then select the frequency for payments (Month, Quarter, Half a year, Year).

So don't understand how you set up a Standing Order for 'last day of month'?

<snip> Yes, he might be able to claim it back, but they may also point to some wording in the T&Cs that says they always treat February as 28 days or somesuch. Try it anyway. Nothing to lose.

I can't recall ever seeing anything like this in any bank account T&Cs that I've seen.

The OP means the last working day of the month, because BACS Direct Credits (the mechanism for paying 90%+ of the UK population's salaries and benefits) don't work on none bank working days.

I think it'll turn out to be the 31st of the month, but we'll see what the OP comes back with.

Well his wages go in on the last day of the month and we haven't had a problem like this before.

    The previous dates have been:

    30 Jan 2012 | 28 Dec 2011 | 28 Nov 2011 | 28 Oct 2011 | 28 Sep 2011 | 30 Aug 2011 | 28 Jul 2011 | 28 Jun 2011 | 31 May 2011 | 28 Apr 2011

So it's not always on the same day but then it's not on the last day of the month either. I think he just didn't think about his new payday when he changed jobs stupid boy.
Those dates indicate to me that the SO is set up to be paid on the 28th of the month. Where the 28th falls on a non working day the payment is made the next working day.

As a matter of interest if a monthly SO is set up on the 31st of an appropriate month, what are the payment rules for shorter months?

The bank shouldn't allow you to set up a monthly payment on the 31st, because it only exists in 7 of the 12 months of the year.

But as a general rule, a payment will be made on the soonest working day it can.

Well I have just "successfully" changed the next payment date on an existing monthly standing order to 31 May. As a test will leave that running until June to see what happens.

It should go out on the 1st of the next month if there is no 31st :D It won't be sent out earlier if it is SO. DD are a different matter entirely..I'm sure they are a law onto themselves..lol

Thanks for the response. By "the 1st of the next month" do you mean the 1st working day of the next month? I'm assuming "working day" also applies to the 31st?
