My friend is to sign a new contract
2 days at 9am to 3.30 6.5 hours
2 days at 9am to 3.00 6 hours.
Am I righ in thinking that she is entitled to a 20 minute paid break within these hours and not at the beginning or the end.
Many thanks.

No, you are not right.
Your friend would be entitled to an unpaid break of 20 minutes on the days when she works 6.5 hours.
The breaks are if a work shift lasts longer than 6 hours, so a 6-hour shift doesn't qualify.
If she is under 18 then the entitlement would be to 30 minute breaks each day as all shifts are over 4.5 hours.
However you are right that the break must not be at the beginning or end of the shift.0 -
No a 6 hour shift does not legally entitle her to a break
from directgov website
Rest breaks - a break during your working day
As an adult worker (over 18), you will normally have the right to a 20 minute rest break if you are expected to work more than six hours at a stretch.

It all seems a bit daft. so on the day that she works 6.5 hours she can have a 20 minute unpaid break so if she wanted to earn the same money she would have to work 6.5 hours plus 20 minutes.
On the other two day she would be expected to work 6 hours without a break at allmake the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.

So the 6 hour day is 6 hours pay and the 6.5 hour day is paid for 6 hours and 10 mins (if in fact she gets a 20 min break - she could get more)0 -

No - if on the 6.5 hour days she wants to earn the same money but have a break she would work for 6.5 hours but start earlier and/or finish later (if that were permitted) to make up the 20-minute break.
It's not daft. The employer pays for work, not for someone to have a break.0 -

Do current arrangements provide a paid break? Why is the change being implemented?
Being pedantic over the breaks is unlikely to give the employer a flexible and committed workforce - imho its extremely short sighted.
I had far better working conditions back in the '70's than are generally being offered in the current times.Don’t be a can’t, be a can.0 -

Daft was maybe the wrong word, presumably you have never done hard manual labour and your company expects you to do this work non stop for 6 hours. I maybe should have said ridiculous.make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.

It's being prepared at the moment, she will be given it this week to look over and sign in she agrees to it.
