I tunes - transferring to another pc

Ok, so I'll admit to being hopelessly dim on the technical front before I even begin.
Situation is hubby and I both have Ipods and I have a single I Tune account with them both on. Music on the IPods consist of both bought music from the Apple store and cd's which I downloaded on to an old pc and transferred over.
The old pc has died and I wasn't planning on getting it repaired as I have a laptop - my question is how can I get access to the Ipod library to transfer it all (my own music as well as the bought stuff) over to the laptop so I can run it from there?
I emailed Itunes however I think they may have misunderstood the question as they advise I should set up a new user account and repurchase the music. Surely I don't have to buy it all again and download all my old cd's (which are in the attic)?
If that's the only option then it would possibly be cheaper to get the old pc repaired and access from there but that is only a temporary solution I would have thought.
I'm stuck here - any advice much appreciated.
Thanks

Surely there must be a way of downloading music from your iPods to iTunes on the new PC? I don't use iAnything so I can't be more specific.
No doubt an iExpert can advise...

Worth answering, as it might be easier to just throw your hdd into another computer and copy over stuff, or put it in a cheapy enclosure so you can copy your converted music/itune folder etc over.
Essentially you can just log into itunes on your new laptop with your old details and voila, but because I don't let itunes [strike]mess up[/strike] manage my music, I dont know if t'd transfer back from ipod itself, prolly not. apple tend not to like that. You can get programs that will transfer though. YMMV with these however.0 -

think it is just old age. There was a nasty burning smell, a sort of grinding noise and then nothing. Doesn't power up. We've had it since 2001 and it's now had repairs totalling over £500 in addition to the original cost so I'm reluctant to spend any more. I have a laptop which I prefer as I can wander where I like in the house.
Thanks to all - I'll check out the links and see what I can try next. I just found it hard to believe that there wouldn't be a way of getting the music off, or alternatively downloading from the Ipod's to the laptop. I think it will be a weekend job when I have time to look into the options properly.0
