Phone call or paperwork?

I believe you can now just call the companies you are trying to reclaim ppi from, but is it wiser to initiate paperwork?
Don't try to keep up with the Joneses - Drag them down to your level - it's cheaper .

Seems to depend on the Bank. Just going by this forum, LloydsTSB seem to be upholding complaints made only by telephone but still seem very reticent to payout. HSBC appear to require the FOS questionnaire to be filled out for each complaint.
On balance, I'd say to follow the advice here:
