"connect broadband connection" pop up problems

Hi

Suddenly after months of accessing the internet with our wireless router (using firefox), we have now started getting popups with "connect brodband connection" as the title, and then the connection seems to have been dropped, until we press cancel on that window.

We also can no longer use Internet explorer as we are getting a dial-up connection pop up!

Can anyone suggest what I could do to fix this?
thanks
Shona

  • Sounds like malware, you should give your machine a scan. I'd recommend that you don't use Internet Explorer either, or if you really _have_ to use it for something, then upgrade to IE7. You'd be better off with another browser such as Firefox though.

    quickie answer for IE

Tools menu >> Internet Options >> Connections Tab >> Click "Never dial a connection" >> OK to close wiindow .....

Are you able to see any other wireless networks ? Maybe the neighbours have gone wireless ? Have you DECT phones or any other wireless items ?

Usual security questions are you using WPA/WEP ? changed the default Admin password on the router ? Not broadcasting your SSID ? Firewall on the laptop ? Anti-virus running ?

maybe some more answers here http://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/showthread.html?t=121274

If it is Malware run thru the first 4 posts of this sticky .... Malware/Spyware Removal Guide but it sounds like a Windows networking message and the signal is being lost.

When you get IE working vist MS Updates >> Tools menu >> Windows Updates ....

Thanks - that worked for Explorer - brilliant.
I only use it for accessing work stuff - for some reason you have to - otherwise we use Firefox which I much prefer.
I'll try upgrading to version 7, and I'll see about malware - I know we (ie not me but my OH!) use AVG - but perhaps it doesn't stop malware. I'll let you know how I get on!

    Thanks again all

IE7 is now one of the Get high-priority updates (recommended) for XP - it has to be opted out of installing. Sounds like you may need to run updates anyway - to ensure that your Windows is upto date and patched as far as possible... And you will get IE7 along the way ....

Windows Defender is another good freebie from MS to get..

Doing the first 4 posts listed will load your system with some good free anti anyspyware software and act as prevention as well as cure, esp if you use the Immunize feature of Spybot etc...
