How would you approach this roundabout?

Probably lane 1 or 2 if i didn't know the roundabout and therefore know that the only other exits were to continue on same road or go back on myself.
I'd have a hard time arguing that lane 3 could be legitimately used, but if I knew the roundabout and there was traffic in 1 and 2 then I'd be up lane 3 like a shot and then cut into the second lane of the second exit. I don't think this is probably the correct thing to do though.
FWIW I would say the lanes would be designated something like...
Lane 1: 1st exit, or 2nd exit lane 1
Lane 2: 2nd exit lane 2
Lane 3: 3rd and 4th exit0 -
When it's busy, L1 can back right up and spill onto the A48, clogging up one of the main routes out of Cardiff and onto the M4. You'll get the odd person like me who will wind everyone up by shooting up L2 and taking the L2 exit onto the northbound DC, but most people just queue there for ages and leave the other two lanes empty.
These people are stupid so they deserve to sit in traffic for no reason.0 -
As someone who uses this roundabout on an 'almost' daily basis, I usually go in the middle lane on the slip-road as I approach the stop line on the roundabout, then exit on the right hand lane of the dual carriageway going up to Cardiff Gate.
I leave the inside lane for turning left (of which traffic is usually minimal) and for taking the first exit onto the dual carriageway (which the traffic is usually heavy, and backs up)
The middle lane imo is for those taking that 2nd lane exit, and for going back onto Eastern Avenue if you came off by mistake
I would use the right hand lane for looping back around and returning in the direction i came in (i.e. if i missed my junction).
..Now don't get me started on the people that can't keep in their lanes on the Newport road junction, even when they're now fully marked on the tarmac.Only two things are infinite, the universe and human stupidity, and I'm not sure about the former. - Albert Einstein0 -

I agree with BlueC. I remember my driving instructor telling me if in doubt to stay in the left hand lane which I probably would in this situation until I knew the roads well.
DH says he would enter in middle lane and come off in 2nd lane onto the dc.0 -
There is a very similar roundabout I use daily and although it should probably be the left hand lane I always use the right hand lane along with the majority of drivers.0

So many terrible roundabouts in that area
This one annoys the crap out of me because if you are heading south, it goes to 3 lanes, and the roundabout is big enough for 3 lanes, but nobody ever uses the leftmost lane.
People in L1 cut into L2 as they go straight ahead.
People in L2 sometimes cut into L3, sometimes they stay in L2, and sometimes they stay in L2, then suddenly pull across without looking because some muppet from L1 has cut into L2.
My favourites are still the ones on the Newport ring road where the roundabout is marked up for 2 lanes, but the approach road has 3 lanes.0 -

Same here.If my posts have random wrong words, please blame the damn autocorrect not me0 -

L3 - 3rd and 4th exit.
So you would dedicate a whole lane for returning to the road from which you left? Something that you would only do if you'd made a navigation error.0 -

The signage:

Basicaly first or second is fine, but third is a bad idea because you are turning left and the people taking the straight-on exits are likely to use the second lane.0
