Autism report, Glasgow?

After promotion at work I'm struggling to deal with all the people that I'm supposed to manage. There's my boss, 6 staff members on our site, 4 from a different site who we over see and then all the customers who I'm supposed to be able to deal with.

Big boss has spotted that I'm having problems already (regional manager is brilliant) and has pointed out that the management training programme assumes that the trainee has normal social skills. Now while I've managed so far because I just do the same thing every day with every person I can't do that in my new position, most of my "people" skills are trained and not natural.

The company have offered to support me IF I can get an up to date report about my autism and how it affects me. Work aren't willing to fund this as it existed before I started there and they've just shelled out thousands on adapting my physical work space post transplant.

Although my old GP was supportive I've only ever been assessed once and that was in childhood, the report we have ( from 1991) doesn't take account work places as I was 4 when it was written. All of the support/therapy I have had over the years was private so there is nothing on my medical records to show it. Last time I mentioned autism to the GP I was told I'd outgrown it as I'm 25 and getting on well at work.

So I am considering going private to get an up to date report, does anyone know how I can get one done in Glasgow (Edinburgh/Falkirk at a push) that I won't need a GP referral for?

  • There's the Autism Resource Centre in Glasgow. I know they say they deal with post-diagnostic support, but they will probably know details regarding private diagnosis from people who are using the service:

  • It maybe worth talking to the Disability Advisor at your local JCP.

You have your diagnosis, you don't grown out of autism, you just have coping mechanisms and strategies that help you deal with the world around you...one that you don't necessarily understand.

Through the job centre, my son, who has Asperger's, was offered access to a work psychologist, to look at how he learns, and what support will be needed in a work place environment. We've not had our first appointment yet, so I can't say how it's gone, but I would think as it specifically looks at the workplace, it would be a more appropriate option, especially, if it assists in keeping a person employed.

I would start keeping a diary of your work day, difficulties you used to have, and the strategy you now use to deal with that, and things that are new and you don't know how to deal with. All this would make a very good starting point for a report, as you obviously have a good understanding of how you function, and much of any report will be based on anecdotal information.

Wow, she's onto a good thing. That's about £1300 more than I paid for a report.
