iPod - hardly used - just over one year and hard drive is broke.

I having a frustrating experience. I bought and iPod in Jan 2011 did not really get round to using it till the back end of the year and a month after the warranty the hard drive packed in. This is despite it not leaving my property and only being used in a docking station.

Amazon who I bought it from point to the year being up, Apple have offered me a replacement for £100.00 (with only 90 day warranty) but they did comment at the Genius Bar it was super condition and they are puzzled why it would go wrong.

Unless there is a way to get someone at Apple to make an exception it is either spend £100.00 and hope it does not fail, or pay £180 odd for the extra year.

Has this happened to anyone else?

Which iPod is it? You may be able to replace the harddrive yourself, for less than £100.

I Would be pushing that it's not fit for purpose, that it should last longer than just over 1 year. Do you know exactly that the HDD doesn't work with it? If that's the case, I think you need to get back in touch with apple and demand that it's got to be faulty (assuming that there's no obvious signs of say, it being dropped or something) to only last 1 year, and 2 months.

Hard drives are not simple devices and they are not immune from manufactuing defects. a fair number do fail inthe first few months of usage during the initial "burn-in"

Forget warranty. Go back to amazon and say you want a replacement under your statutory rights. Manufacturers warranty does not apply here. Clearly it is not fit for purpose.
I'm retiring at 55. You can but dream.

I think that may be a shout, before I got round to using it instead of my more smaller Samsung player which has been good as good it must have started failing a few months.

Amazon are not being helpful - Apple you cannot write to anyone. Only thing I was thinking and long shot is if I paid by credit card to speak to them and see if there is any coverage?

okay, third time trying to write this post. mouse keeps messing me around back/forward buttons!

If amazon aren't playing right through customer service. Go to your apple store with the item, and a receipt/date of order and ask to talk to a manager regarding the fault. Take note of his name/position.

Talk calmly, firmly, and have in mind what you want to happen before. Ask for either a new product (maybe a refurb is acceptable in this case) or for a full repair, free of charge (including a reasonable warranty, 3 months is imo).
Take a copy of the relevant information regarding your rights of faulty items/right to expect an item to last a reasonable time, and push on these points. An item of only a few months use, bought only 14 months ago, pristine condition (with no drop marks etc), should work longer than it has.

Put the ball in their court with your facts, and if the manager doesn't play nicely with it, ask for the details of the company head office along side the complaints department, and state that you will be following it up, and include an overview of the treatment you've had in their stores.

You might want to ask in consumer rights section as well, as this is more than offering some secret word to make Apple play nice unfortunately. They might be able to offer you help better.
