Unrecognised mp3

Options
hey

Have recently invested in an mp3 and had no problem at home plugging it into my usb port and downloading my music, I've come to work and tried to do the same but am having a few problems.

When I plug it in and click on my computer it doesn't show up like it did on my pc at home. I've checked the device manager and it is functioning correctly. Is this to do with my settings or am I looking in the wrong place.

Thanks

  • What OS are you using at home and work? Is it the same one?

XP on both, someone in my office said that she had the same problem and she had to change some settings but that someone talked her through it and she can't remember what she changed.

I hope thats all it is.

  • Did you get a Manufacturers CD with the MP3 Player?

Maybe you need to install some software which is on it....although XP normally doesnt need any additional stuff for USB Devices.

nope, it doesn't need any software, as I said before it worked no problem on my computer at home and last night I transferred some data for my brother and it works on his pc as well, they are all on XP.

  • I have the same problem as well, got both a normal usb flash drive and a mp3 usb drive as well.
Both work fine at home but not at work.

Both run XP but different versions, xp home and xp pro.
It is with pro that i have the problems.

The software with it is only for win 98.

Having asked IT dept at work, they suggested that the flash drives were usb 1.1 not 2.0 (which they were) and something about should be backwards compatible but are not always.
Any way, asked me to disable in device properties the bit in usb drives about enhanced.
Unfortunately this didnt work and my usb mouse stopped working.

    Can anyone else help

I have seen something similar in windows 2000 so may well be the same in XP. If you have network drives at work windows might well be trying to give your usb driver the same drive letter.

You should be able to change this by going into start>programs > administrative tools and selecting computer management under 'storage' and 'disk management' you should see the usb drive, if you right click on it you should be able to asign it a new drive letter.

    hope that makes sense.
