Rockery (pic) - Advice, suggestions and ideas please!

Calling anyone more experienced than me!

IMG_0299.jpg

I'm almost ready to start planting but can anyone suggest any ideas for plants?

I've put my hebe in the corner already and it's looking really well. I've never done a rockery before and am not really sure of plants/ grasses etc.

I was thinking once I've planted to cover the ground with some nice stones/pebbles to keep the weeds down and minimise the upkeep?

Am also wondering if I need more rocks?

If you want an honest answer ? you need more rocks , with some standing more proud , at the moment looking a little flat.
  • I agree some more rocks as for plants sedum's are great (go for the smaller varieties). There are many types, they crawl over the rocks and are drought resistant. They are also cheap and easy to grow more of- just rip a bit off stuff it in some soil and away you go) I also really like saxifraga.

Thanks for the advice and suggestions so far!

I've added a few more rocks and stood some of the existing ones a little more proud of the soil.

Dogcat and walkers crisps, thanks for the plant ideas. I'm planning a trip to a few local garden centres tomorrow or tuesday so will be on the look out for your suggestions

I *think* it's north facing, although I could be wrong!

I'll add some more photos as I go along.

Would also be grateful of some more ideas/photos

I have two rockeries/borders. I have a large number of alpines planted, together with miniature specie daffodils. Because a lot of the Alpine colour is during the spring months I pop in Buzzy Lizzie plants, nasturtium seeds, pansies etc to maintain colour over the year. I have several varieties of Oxalis which produce lovely foliage and one variety has a mass of beautiful pink flowers throughout the summer.

Here are the pictures. Not a 'true' rockery as I have other things growing in it. Currently auriculas, pulsatilla, chionodoxa, violas, saxifrage, aubretia, specie daffs and tulips all doing OK. A bit messy because the snowdrop foliage still there. Other things planted are Oxalis, campanula, saponaria, gentian, pansy, primula wanda, lewisia, mimulus.

Extra colour added throughout season by planting brightly coloured annuals.

    Hope this helps!
