Ist car insurance
Options
I am in the process of helping my 17year old daughter her first car and been trawling through insurance quotes. I know the issues about fronting and have put her as the main driver and me as an additional driver, however a friend has recommended that I should be the registered owner/keeper of the car when we buy it
Firstly, will it make any difference to the insurance quote (and if yes, why)
And, is it ok to do this?

Your friend is talking rubbish. Your daughter needs to be the registered keeper and most insurance companies would expect the main driver to be.
Whilst its not illegal, its pointless.0 -
Thanks, I think he did it for his sons car - on advice from someone else I guess. Maybe their line of thinking was a young driver may look after the car better if it belonged to their parent (however the reverse could be more accurate!!!)0

It will make getting quotes harder as most comparison sites assume you are the owner and keepr of the vehicle, Which she wont be. So that could actually increase the premium.Censorship Reigns Supreme in Troll City...0

The only people who genuinely don't take part on fronting are the few honest muppets who like writing about it and sayong that its illegal on a public forum (me includes). The rest keep quiet, do it, don't get caught and cartainly stay away from forums!
But to answer your q. Ideally named driver should be registered keeper.0 -

You mean the main driver should be the registered keeper surely?Be Alert..........Britain needs lerts.0 -
A few do get caught out though, Been several posts on here that i can remember.
One that sticks in my mind was the lad who crashed his dads car, Registered to his dad who had no insurance and had not driven the car him self because he had another one or was it a company car?
Either way insurance thought it dodgy, Which it probably was.Censorship Reigns Supreme in Troll City...0 -

It's fairly easy for an Insurer to discover a fronted policy and they usually discover them at the time of a claim.
The consequences are the own damage claim being refused, the third party claim being paid (Not unusual for it to be tens of thousands for young driver claims) and then pursuing the policyholder eg parent for their outlay so there's the outside possibility of them losing their house.
The policy will be voided, often with the premium being kept, the parent then has the major problem of having to declare that they have had a policy cancelled / voided for (Currently) the rest of their lives. This makes it very difficult eg normally very very expensive for them to take out any type of Insurance eg car, home, life etc etc.
It also means everyone else ends up paying higher premiums to subsidise the fronted policies as the Insurers are not collecting a premium to reflect the much higher risk of a young driver. Hence why the "Honest muppets" get annoyed with fronted policies
It's really not worth the risk, granted plenty of people get away with it, but plenty of people also get caught out0
