No claims bonus problem

Options
I renewed my insurance using go compare and failed to notice that whilst the have calculated that I have 9 years no claims bonus my previous insurer simply says 5 or more.
The new insurer wants an extra £80 for the "discrepancy".
I have been insured for at least 9 years without claim - is there anything I can do? Or has my old insurer effectively capped the NCB at 5 years.

They know this when they let you select more than 5 years, that most will only give 5.
It helps them get on top of the price board, then they just screw you over for the rest later.

Your new insurer has effectivly screwed you over as VAX2002 states most insurers use the terminology 5 or more.

What you can do is ask your old insurer for a statement to say 9 years.

    Thanks for the advice
Presumably Go Compare don't do badly either as they get referal fees.
Is it worth suggesting to Martin that he puts a note in the insurance section?

If you have kept all the renewal quotes for the last 5 years you should be able to demonstrate that you started with 5 years NCD and haven't made any claims since -therefore 9 years NCD is true.

  • Hi
They tried this on me a couple of years ago
I was lucky and have kept my last 8 years worth of renewal notices
My last renewal does say more that 9 years NCB so perhaps insurance companies are playing fair?
1 of the others also say 9 but some say 5 or more
The company who tried it on were quite taken back when i said i could prove it and sent them 4 years worth of renewal notices which they promptly returned to me and i never heard another word
At the time i told all my mates to retain their notices to stop this happening to them
Hope you can sort this out

Your previous insurer wasn't Swiftcover was it, by any chance? My renewal notice with them said five years, when I actually had 13. I phoned Swiftcover to ask them to send me full proof, and it arrived in the post in a couple of days.
  • So if I have the paperwork to prove no claims, and I was on 11 years NCB this time last year but my renewal notice this year says 5 years, can I claim 12 years or would sticking to 11 be safer?

    Cheers.
