using ipod touch to facetime from USA to UK??

hi all,
my parents are going to usa next week and would desperatly like to keep in contact with us via facetime so they can talk and see myself and 4 daughters...the last trip cost them a small,no,large fortune in mobile credit so im hoping we can do it this way!!
i have an iphone 4s and they are borrowing my daughters ipod touch 4g (already set up and working well lol) my question is-if they go into any starbucks to use their free wifi,how does it work...they wouldnt be very good at having to go into the browser to register an account ect and i cant see any info other than its just free and click connect lol
have any of you done this and is it easy or am i wasting their time trying to teach them to use facetime in the first place lol?

they would need to sign into the iPod touch and facetime with an appleID if there isn't one signed in already, but other than that if your contact is in the iPod then they would just have to connect to the wifi, tap facetime, tap your contact and wait until you pick up.

only problem is that some free wifi like Starbucks requires you to sign in via the browser, not sure about in the US though.

another option is to install skype on the iPod (and your iPhone) and they could then skype you via video, voice or IM.

both solutions because it is wifi would be totally free, you can test and demo it to them before they go to make sure it works.

I did this last year & it was brilliant! (Both Skype & Facetime)

BUT - I found the Hotel's free WIFI easier to use than Starbucks.

you guys are fab..........thanks for answering my question! ive told my mum if the malls have free wifi then i insist she carrys the ipod around her neck connected to me so i can watch all the nice things too that she sees lol then point out what i need brough home (cinnamon sugar pop tarts,butter fingers,swiss miss hot choc mmmmmmmmmmm yum lol)
