Disability and Showers

I have just come out of a short spell in hospital. Using their shower was absolutely lovely. It had a little seat and bars etc. Come home to my over the bath shower and it is a nightmare. There are 2 of us in our household with chronic arthritis and I now have a heart condition also.
Does anyone know if I can get a grant or any help towards having the bath removed and a walk in shower installed please?

have you tried the council ? when we were being assessed for a bungalow someone came out to see if there was anything they could do to enable us to stay in our own home .This is a system account and does not represent a real person. To contact the Forum Team email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0

ask for an assessment, we had one...bath taken out and "walk in " shower installed0

I can't use a bath - due to mobility/balance problems. I had on Occupational Therapist come and assess me and she recommended a walk-in shower conversion - which the council will pay for.
However, things vary from area to area.....and timing can be a huge issue - it can take up to a year to see an OT - and then another year or so before the work will get done!0 -
thank you so much for your answers. I will ask my doctor if I can see an OT and take it from there.

The council added a downstairs wetroom with a walk in shower for my son. He also has a Closomat toilet, which cleans and dries the genital area. The grant is called a Disabled facilities Grant and is means tested.0

In our area there is a place called anchor staying put, they might be a national company, they help get grants for adaptions for the disabled to allow them to stay in their own homes, they got a grant for me for a wet roomnot all on benefits are scroungers and don't need to be bullied!0

OP, you do not need a GP referral for OT, you can self refer. Check your council's website and it should tell you how to go about it.0

Correct I refered myself and after having a few meetings with people who to be honest were very helpful i got a full electric shower put in for free anlong with a bath seat, of course what you need will differ from others but they tailor to suit your needs.OP, you do not need a GP referral for OT, you can self refer.
