Cannot get internet explorer

I don't use it very often but I currently cannot get IE. I am on Windows XP and downloaded IE8 but it appears for a second and stops. My other browsers are OK. Any ideas? Will this affect my Windows updates?

Yes, as IE is integral to XP, it is possible that it not functioning correctly could affect other things, not just the use of Windows or Microsoft updates.

Try starting it in no add-ons mode first.

Thank you waddler_8. You were spot on. Now my Skype, which apparently depends on IE might work.

Good - Did you suss out the add-on that was causing the problem, or was it skype?

The add-on that I disabled was "Abine Inc. Do Not Track Plus".
Don't know what that was about. Thanks again for your help. Still not getting Skype to open. I get the message "Warning 1909. Could not create Shortcut SKYPE.INK."
