400 mile commute per week - what car?

I would guess the op sensibly doesn't want a massive loan for the car, so has to pay up front for it, whereas the fuel they can pay for as they use it each month, and get their salary in.0 -

wow, didn't realise I had to have a set amount of savings to buy a car or declare my income before i can afford fuel (not just yet anyhow lol),
I do not wish to take out any finance to buy a newer car, id rather be debt free - and my spare money (after fuel) is spent on nice things like holidays etc or I will save up over time and then buy a newer more economical car :-)

wow, didn't realise I had to have a set amount of savings to buy a car or declare my income before i can afford fuel (not just yet anyhow lol),

Actually, if you have a car that you know and is reliable you may be better off, in the short/medium term sticking with it rather than buying someone else's cast off problems. How many times will your new employer wear the excuse 'my new car broke down' . You can buy a fair bit of fuel for £1k.:) Just a thought.0
