There was interesting feature on last Friday's "Working Lunch" . This was about a London councils' Trading Standards department which sent out 800 fake scam letters to people telling them they had won thousands of pounds, and all they needed to do was to send a £10 "processing fee" They had 8 replies (with cheque), so this shows at least 1% of the population are taken in by such scams.

Of course the council did not cash the cheques and they contacted the individuals to show them the error of their ways. What was heartening was that several people contacted Trading Standards to warn them about the letters.

So if we extrapolate that 1%, it looks as though there are thousands of people out there who are likely to fall for these scams.

There was also another survey done by one of the BBC day time programmes a few months back that suggested that when polled 10% of people would be happy to supply personal details including log in information to a bank by email 'if they banked with that particular bank' , that figure dropped, but still not to 0% if the email was from a bank with which they held no account.

There really is one born every day and I can see no real way of protecting people from themselves.
