That's not what that article says at all.
As the article says, HMRC allows you to reclaim any costs "that that have been ‘wholly and exclusively’ incurred in connection with your trade"
The figure of a fixed amount of £3/wk is a suggestion by some in the hope that this will allow you to fly under the HMRC radar.
However, the article is correct where it states:To avoid triggering an HMRC investigation when you make your claim on your self-assessment form, you must be sure that your claim is genuine and necessary. You should only claim if the amounts involved are significant and if you genuinely do use a proportion of your home solely for running your business. You should be prepared to provide full calculations for any expenses claimed."Now to trolling as a concept. .... Personally, I've always found it a little sad that people choose to spend such a large proportion of their lives in this way but they do, and we have to deal with it." - MSE Forum Manager 6th July 20100 -
Well, my office accounts for 20% of the total floor space of my apartment, so I presume that it should be OK to claim that amount as a reasonable expense. It only contains office equipment, and doesn't have a bed, or anything of that nature in it.
Additionally, I'll claim the same proportion in utilities and internet costs, and all other claims will be direct office costs (printing, phone, travel costs, etc.)
Does that seem reasonable?
