Luton to Leeds

Does anyone know the cheapest way to travel from Luton to Leeds? My young cousin has been offered a job with one of the 'no-frills' airlines and is moving over from Belgium tomorrow. The company provide him with hotel accomodation during the week for his 1st months training but he's left to his own devices on a weekend. It's obviously too far for him to return home every weekend so he's asked if he can stay with us but I'm not sure which is the cheapest way for him to travel bearing in mind that he's skint and doesn't get paid for the 1st month either! He will be coming to Leeds on a Friday and returning early Monday morning.

Midland Mainline train - fares from £6 one way if you book in advance on the Midland Mainline website.

    Otherwise try National Express
  • just had a look for you.

problem is with midland mainline, you have to book well in advance to get cheap tickets (peak times). would your cousin qualify for a young persons railcard?

national express is a much cheaper bet (?+card) either from luton to leeds or if you can work round their 'from £1 fares' offers.

there's also megabus and megatrain, but i don't know if either do similar journeys.

does the airline fly in and out of leeds and london?
  • Thanks for that. Cheapest train appears to be about £70 with a Young People's Railcard and National Express seem to take about 7 hours for the journey! Unfortunately it's Easyjet he's working for and they don't fly to anywhere near me. Megabus is more reasonable but another problem is that he has to be back for work on a Monday am so looks like he'll need to set off in the middle of the night. I'm beginning to think it'll probably be cheaper for him to go back to Belgium!! Anyone have any other ideas?

Working for easyjet, could he get a cheap deal with car hire and drive up (assuming he can drive of course!)
  • Mmmm - never thought about that. he can drive but didn't drive very often at home - he's also never driven in the UK so a 3 hour journey might be a bit daunting to him! I'll suggest it anyway. thanks for the idea!

Travelling from London to Leeds on a Friday and travelling back on a Monday morning is always going to attract the most expensive fares, as both are peak times - he may find it cheaper to stay down there (are there any youth hostels nearby)?
