DLA -Is it paid in advance or arrears?

I'm sorting out the affairs of someone who has died and I'm unsure whether the estate is owed money or owes it.
Does anyone know if DLA is paid in advance or in arrears? Is it the same for state pension?
Thanks

Thank you all - I called the DWP helpline today and spent over an hour being passed from DLA to Pensions and various offices... the 'Tell Us Once' system (designed so that you register the death and then all the official stuff happens automatically) didn't work and we are due 2 weeks and 3 days of pension and DLA - apparently the records had just been archived without contacting a next of kin.
All sorted now - thanks for your help.:hello:0
