Toshiba Laptop is the wireless problem

I spent a couple of hours today trying to setup a buck-standard Netgear wireless usb stick and router to run with a Toshiba laptop.
I was attempting to connect but not getting there. Tried with and without encryption. Tried with Windows Zero and Netgear s/w.
Tried different stick. Tried different router.
Still no luck.
Done a lot of Windows updates.
Problem? Toshiba Laptops have a lousy, useless, wireless configuration program which mucks about with the settings. Uninstall it immediately when you get a laptop. It is rubbish.
