Hi everyone, I have searched the forum and couldnt find an answer to my question so i've made a new thread.
My question is, is it a legal requirement to be asked the last 3 digits of your credit or debit card when making a purchase??
Ive somehow had two transactions on a betting account which I have no idea of (depositing money onto the website) but there is no way this could of happened as I dont know the last 3 digits of the back my debit card to authorise the deposit.
Hope this post makes sense, i'm very stressed and just looking for a little advice. Thank you

It's a requirement of the payment processor that the company uses.
edit after your edit: some companies don't require any verification. Amazon for instance for me I just click and it comes to the door within a few days then comes off my credit card bill. It happens automatically. I don't need to add the number when I click to buy. It just happens. It may be saved but that number is not supposed to be saved so they may just put it through without the number.:footie:Regular savers earn 6% interest (HSBC, First Direct, M&S)
Loans cost 2.9% per year (Nationwide) = FREE money.

Within the merchant software where retailers can view/manage payments etc, you can select the level of verification when processing a card payment and how it's dealt with. You can process payments without a valid CSV code. It's just most merchants will not allow payments where this fails to match for security reasons. Here the retailer can also fail or pass a payment depending on whether the post code matches that the card is registered to and select whether to use 3D secure or not.
A retailer also have the facility to charge your card without the card details at a later date by processing a payment using a 'cross reference' number generated by the original transaction.
So the answer is yes.
But you should be worrying less about that and more about how did they get your long card number, expiry date etc?
If the payment is unauthorized then contact your bank to cancel the card and dispute the transactions.0 -
Not all companies check the CSV. For instance GiffGaff I put the wrong CSV in and it still processed the payment.0
