It's common practice these days I'm afraid. If you read the renewal notice it actually tells you that you need to call up before the start date to cancel or do nothing should you want to continue the policy.

Yes, it's that common I go with the default assumption it's going to auto-renew as that many companies do it. Entirely for my convenience of course and not a sly chance to bump up the price and hope I won't notice...I do find it irritating particularly as it's not something you can seem to opt out of, at least not easily.

Just a thought but if they auto renewed your car (assumed on road) then they did you a favour by you not having an uninsured vehicle.

Absolutely. The renewal date was the 6th of March - I renewed with Elephant on the 5th of March, and Admiral took the money out of my account on the 12th. They put it back in on the 19th.

Interestingly the Admiral renewal was £2(!) more than the previous year, whereas the Elephant quote was about £100 cheaper.

I've switched between Admiral and Elephant for the past four years for a cheaper price at renewal- bonkers, but the way of the world these days.

Can I just comment on that, if you are going to say what i think you might. I go away to sea for months at a time, so unless someone else is opening my post an insurance company could well take payment and i would be none the wiser, so for them to take it on the basis of probably a clause buried in the T&C's is a bit unfair.

You can write to cancel a continuous payment authority at any time...so unless you are away at sea for over 12 months (in which case you probably don't even need a car let alone insurance for it), simply inform the insurer when you can.

I tend to do so as soon as they send me the documents at inception so that I'm not caught out at renewal.

I prefer to be in total control insuring my vehicle, but the system of auto-renewal was introduced because many people are not as fastidious as me (or perhaps because they are away at sea at time of renewal which may otherwise result in their vehicle being left uninsured)

You are right of course but I was answering this point.
