Real life MMD: She broke my phone — should I make her pay?

Had you thought about insuring the phone now and then claiming when the initial period is over. Seems like the sort of skanky low life stunt you would pull if you feel everyone else should pay for your lifestyle.0

this has to be a fake thread by MSE to get people posting.
aftert all i'd imagine the OPs workmates will be reading this....0 -
A £500 uninsured phone?? foolish!
What if YOU had dropped it? Lost it?
Dont blame colleague for trying to help! This was an accident.
An office where mobiles are allowed to ring??!! The boss should be held partly responsible!
It was the boss talking to you that caused your colleague to intervene here in the first place!
Anyway - have your tried the office insurance? Some policies offer "accidental damage" not only for the office contents, computers, & documents but also for the personal effects of business owners and employees.0 -

Absolutely NOT! How would you feel if you were in your collegues position? It was an accident and I am sure they were just trying to be helpful as you were occupied with your boss.
2 things here
1 If the phone was working after she dropped it then its not her fault it went wrong a day later, thats just unfortunate coincidence!
2 It was an accident ! If you can afford to pay for a luxury £500 mobile then yoou should be paying for insurance! Not taking chances and blaming your stupidity on others and moaning that you now dont have a posh mobile.
I think your colllegue was more than helpful offering you a cheap phone in replacement. Even if it was a second hand one it works and does the job without the flash and bling. You may have even grown to like it at least until your free upgrade came along!
Be more apreciative and respectful to what money means to most people theres plenty of MSE advice on here.Failure is only someone elses judgement.
Without change there would be no butterflies.
If its important to you, you'll find a way - if not, you'll find an excuse ! ~ Easy to say when you take money out of the equation!

Accident? no insurance? bitter pill! swallow it!
why does someone else have to bear the blame for your short arms and long pockets!
sounds like someone has just learnt on of those little lessons that the society usually refers to as growing up!
have a nice day!:D0 -
Well, there is no compulsion for the owner of the phone to have accidental damage insurance on it (however sensible that may be). If the co-worker can be shown to have acted negligently in dropping said phone, and if it is likely that said dropped caused it to become non-functional, then they may liable for replacing the phone with one of a similar specification, or having it repaired (i.e. putting the owner of the phone "whole"). This would probably need pushing up to the point of court (or threats thereof), and would likely lead to a not particularly nice feeling in the working environment, so may well not be the best idea. What mobile costs £500?0

She should have at least offered to pay a little. Maybe you should have had insurance, but these things happen. And Why are everybody saying 'you shouldn't be spending that much on a phone' or 'why d is your phone turned on in work time' in sure to replace a new phone will be in the £100s and can all you self rigorous people say with all honesty you have never made a personal call or text? Proberly not. Why do some folk begrudge others for having nice possessions?0
-
If you can afford to spend £500 on a phone, you should have had it insured, simple as that!
Why anyone would want to spend that much on something that can so easily be lost/broken/stolen is beyond me - £500 would feed my 3 person family for about 2 months!!!!!0 -
If you have personal possessions extension on your home insurance (it covers your personal possessions whilst away from the home, it's ususally an optional extra for about £5 a mnoth), then you might find that this covers your phone.
Of course you would still have your excess, but you could discuss that with your colleague.
IMHO everyone should take a personal possessions extension to their home insurance.0
