I cleared my balances but tiny acorns grew

in Credit cards
I cleared the balances on all my credit cards and went abroad for a while. I kept them for future use. Unknown to me, Barclaycard decided that I still owed £5 so imposed compound charges and interest, drastically cut the limit and finally closed it, claiming I owed almost £50. That's when I noticed, so I protested. "Customer Payments Solutions Department" offered to cut this by about half. A week later I phoned again, was told that there was no such department, that I had in fact cleared the balance, and "refunded" the almost £50. But also she said that I could no longer use the card as the account had been closed. I was not offered a reference number to prove this offer, although the lady gave me her name.
Has anyone else had a similar experience?
Are they admitting they made a mistake, or getting rid of a troublemaker? If the former, why have they closed my account?
I'm happy to be cleared, but they seem to be having it both ways!

Confused - have I actually "posted" my message"
If so, I am replying to myself!
If anyone responds, how will I know?0 -
Why did the £5 balance originate?
That will be the crux of whether they made a mistake or not. And therefore whether this was a goodwill gesture, or them correcting their error.A smile enriches those who receive without making poorer those who giveor "It costs nowt to be nice"0 -
Trailing interest most likely0
