Double debit , from debit card

I went away last week to disneyland in paris :j

Attempted to buy some ice creams from the automated machine in mc donalds. put in chip and pin card, typed in pin, pin machine said unable to process your request.

tried again, transaction processed :D

came home , been charged twice.

Phones Natwest helpline, she says because i typed in my PIN number twice, its 2 transactions and if i dont have a reciept saying the first transaction didnt go through there is nothing she can do

Ok , so it was only £8 . BUt what if it happens again, i have never been given or offered a reciept saying that my transaction hasn't gone through. i have only ever been asked to type my pin in again. i suspect their is not a lot i can do about this . but if their is and anyone knows, please tell me

When you say the transaction has gone through twice does it show the retailers name on your statement or does it just show the amount to be debited?

Best thing would be to contact McDonalds customer service and explain what happened. These automated machines are new. If they can see 2 identical amounts to the same card debited one after the other they may well offer you a (goodwill) refund.

The other suggestion would be to try to dispute the second charge as a duplicate transaction. Don't accept the 'if you don't have a reciept saying the first transaction didn't go through there is nothing I can do' answer. If you dispute the charge, McDonalds would need to produce a receipt showing that the first transaction did go through. Tell NatWest that the transaction didn't reach the declined/receipt stage; the new machine went funny and told you to put the PIN in again. Something along those lines to counter her argument that you need to produce a cancelled or declined receipt. But try with McDonalds customer service first.

It appears that avenue has already been exhausted.

However if this avenue has not already been exhausted as I believe the Retailer Disputes Team can be contacted on 0845 366 0452.

  • The exact same thing happened to me in Disneyland Paris but mine was at Annette's Diner. After getting nowhere with the bank's disputes, I ended up contacting Disney who refunded me after a couple of weeks.
