How long does house buying take?!

I am a first time buyer and wanted to know how long buying a house should take on average from putting in the offer to moving day? I know that this will vary massively but an average would be really useful!

The 'average' is about three months.

In reality, it takes as long as as it takes :(
Everything that is supposed to be in heaven is already here on earth.
  • yeah, i agree with Doozergirl, as long as surveys are ok.
but then again, the longer the chain, the longer it can take.

14 years ago when we were first time buyers we viewed our house on Nov 11th and moved in on Dec 19th. No way would that happen now :D We have been advised by our mortgage advisor that at the moment its taking 8-12 weeks from making mortgage application to moving in.
:heart2: Love isn't finding someone you can live with. It's finding someone you can't live without :heart2:
  • I moved 3 times. The first time it took me 14 weeks (I was a first time buyer with no ongoing chain), second time 7 months (!!) and third time 4 months.
  • 5 months so far - selling to a ftb and buying from a 'moving into rented' so we're the only chain link. I find out today if we can exchange today & move on Friday. Eeek.
