Doing without a phone line?

  • Re elderly parents having to ring their children's mobiles to keep in touch- Use the "3 Ring slam" as recommended on this site. I've trained my old mum to ring my mobile, let it ring for three rounds then hang up. I phone her back straight away if free to speak. No charge to her and most people have inclusive minutes with their contract if they're not PAYG... The alternative is a short text: Please ring when convenient.
...and then the window licker said to me...

How do you get broadband without a landline? Use one of those crappy dongles?

  • I cancelled my BT line a while back, and have never regretted it. I have a cheap PAYG mobile phone, and I am very happy with my mobile broadband dongles!

I advise people to get in touch via email or texts - I hate gossiping and never use a phone unless it is essential - which keeps down the costs for other people.

The best thing is not getting cold calls from India.

Those dongles are so expensive though, don't you get 1GB per month or something silly? And a hit of £5 if you go over that?

Assuming you can get a connection...

Virgin Media cable broadband as OP said in their post.

    It doesn't use a phoneline.
