Took a party of 17 two weeks ago to Newcastle staying at the Gateshead Travelodge.
Everything went by trouble free, nice bit of banter with the staff etc, although one night they asked us to keep the noise down.
Checked out ok and thought that was that...until this morning!
I,as the person who booked it,received a letter from Civil Recovery Services for £150 because someone was smoking in a room!!
They never mentioned this at the time and i`m pretty sure no one was!
What do i do?!

First thing is to find out which room it was, and make sure it was one of your partys. Then find out if the guest in that room smoked? If they do smoke, ask them if they did in the room as youve ended up with a £150 cleaning bill.... I would think travelodgew. ould need to prove it.
Though they wouldnt know at the time you checked out as you just leave, you dont go into the room with the receptionist!0 -
I have stayed in Travelodges all over and I have noticed that the signs about smoking are all over the place.
Now I have noticed that the signs all say There Will be a FINE, they have no authority to FINE anyone, whether you can get out of it as a legal loophole I dont know, but maybe some one can help with that.make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.
and we will never, ever return.0 -
From what I've read over on the parking board, "Civil Recovery Services" are a cowboy outfit who are not likely to do more than send you increasingly threatening and blood-curdling letters and maybe call you.
Maybe a shufty over there might turn-up some strategies for dealing with them.0 -
The TL terms and conditions you agreed to when booking, do state that if someone smokes in the room, they can seek repayment of the costs incurred for specialist cleaning services, administration and for the time the room remains out of action. This may be done by a third party on their behalf it says.

As the person who booked the room, you are liable for the re-payment of the costs they incurred due to one of your party smoking in a room. I would seek to recover the costs from the person who smoked in the room. I would however want proof from TL in the event that someone did smoke in the rooms that they hired and paid for specialist cleaning and that the room was not rented out that day. You could ask them for a detailed invoice. If the specialist cleaning was just a cleaner opening a window and spraying air freshner then the cost would not be £150.0 -
A good friend of mine, who's also my church leader, is being chased by these people too as he "smoked in the room". He has never had a fag in his life!
The onus of proof is on TL to prove you smoked in the room. How can they fine you if they have no proof? Innocent til proven guilty and all that.Who made hogs and dogs and frogs?
