When would i need to hand my notice in?

Hi All
Currently living in my own place and signed a 6 month contract late last year. My first rent payment left my account on the 28th Dec 2011. I am thinking the 28th April and then leave in May? Just wondered if someone else thinks the same?
I know may seem like a daft question to ask if i think i know the answer, i suppose i am just looking for confirmation that my thinking is correct?

If you signed a six month contract and the tenancy started on the 28th of December you are committed to pay the rent until the 28th of June.
No formal notice needs to be given if you plan to vacate on or by the last day of a fixed-term AST but good manners dictate that you should signify your intentions.0 -

You are not required to give notice if you plan to vacate at the expiry of your fixed term tenancy, though obviously it's best doing so.
If you want to leave before the end of the fixed term tenancy, you need your landlord's agreement unless your contract contains a break clause that you can use.
Regarding when your tenancy started (and thus when it will expire), the date the first rent payment left your account is largely irrelevant.
What matters is what is the start date stipulated on the tenancy agreement, and the date you moved in.

The important bit is that you are in a legally-binding contract to pay the rent for six months. You cannot unilaterally decide that you want to end to tenancy before the expiry without your landlord's formal written agreement.0 -
