Natwest Advantage Gold Problem - Advice Needed!

Options
Hey all

When I moved back to the UK after living in Ireland for 10 years in 2009 I opened a new current account with Natwest, they offered mew the Advantage Gold package and at the time I thought it was a pretty good deal and accepted it and obviously began paying £12.95 a month from then on.

Last year I decided it was pointless having this service as I have mobile cover through my provider, full RAC cover through my insurance and am happy to get cheaper travel insurance elsewhere as we only go away once a year if that.

I called Natwest towards the end of September to ask if they could cancel the service and I was advised to write in as well which I also did, then I thought no more of it.

Then today, I realised that I am still paying it 6 months later! I called Natwest and informed them that I had called and sent a letter requesting cancellation of this service and they obviously had not as it was appearing on my statements each month (which admittedly I hadn't checked, thinking the charge was something else like a late payment fee or similar). I was told that the Advantage Gold was still there, and put through to the complaints department who took all the details and said they would get back to me once they had investigated etc.

Is there anything else I can do in order to claim this money back? Ideally I would like to get it back for the 2 years I haven't used it, but particularly the last 6 months after I cancelled the darn thing!

Any advice greatly appreciated!

Thanks!

What more would you like to do?
You have done the correct thing and complained to your bank about them not actioning your previous request to cancel the package.
The bank will advise you how to progress the complaint if you are not satisfied with their response once they have had time to investigate it.
Don't expect any refund for your own error in purchasing the product in the first place, but I'm sure the bank will be forthcoming with a reasonable resolution for them failing to later act on your written instructions. :)

And people wonder why reclaiming charges is seen by some as giant gravy train?

You had an account which which you thought was good and offered defined benefits. You later discover you can get these things cheaper elsewhere, cancelled it and now want not only the money you paid after this cancellation (fair enough), but the money you paid beforehand - when it was 'a pretty good deal'!

Compensation culture is alive and well it seems...
  • Hey guys, I'm also having trouble with this account, I have just turned 18 and the bank told me I would need a new account and surprise surprise I qualified for the gold advantage account, the woman was really persuasive and I felt as I didn't have an option, and now she said I have to wait 6 months until I can cancel it but I am only on an apprentice wage so cannot really afford it
