Can I paint my kitchen worktop?

My neighbour was desperate to do hers and painted the tops in GLOSS paint. Its better than nothing and cheap. Seeing as she did hers in red and the cupboard doors are red with gold handles it looks ok, but you'd have to be careful. Not sure what white would look like.
