Our water board fit meters to any property that changes ownership, so some people simply don't have a choice. We chose - decided that 2 people in a 3 bed house must work out cheaper (and it does).

I guess the saving will only apply as long as the minority of properties are metered. The water companies will soon put the prices up once the majority have meters!

I'm not sure if this applies to every water company but mine has a switchback guarantee:

We are due to get water meters next year. Not sure if we will be better off though. We currently pay £33 a month. We have a 3 bed house and there are two adults and four children in our house.

I thought you got them emptied every few years

You are thinking of a septic tank (nice conversation!!!) A septic tank lets the nasty bits sink to the bottom and the water sort of drains out, so a Septic tank can go a good few years without being emptied.

A cesspoos is a completly closed in tank which holds all the water from showers, taps, sinks, toilet etc.. our shared cesspool holds 12,000 gallons, and everytime it is emptied myself and my two neighbours split the £600.00 bill between us.

We have recently got some new neighbours who seem to be pretty good with not wasting water, the previous neighbour was useless and used so much that we were paying nearly £100.00 per month, as the cesspool was only lasting 9 weeks, instead of the 12-13 average.

I have tried to pursuade our LL to let me use our water meter readings to make the bill more fair (so we each pay for the water we have put in) but she is not interested! I am pretty happy with the siutation at the moment, but if we get useless neighbours again the future we may have to move

We complete on Friday.. I poped down to my new house today to take a few measurements so that we can oder sofa and the current owners gave me a letter from the water company, i opened it and it says that they are coming to fit a water meter in the next week or so and we will be billed in the next 8 weeks after the success installation of the meter...

What are your experiences of water meters...

There is me and my partner and we have bought a 3 bedroom house....

having a meter should be cheaper. There are 4 of us in our house and it's still cheaper than rateable value.....

Jeez i must be the exception to the rule here!

I was paying £52.80 per month for average water use for a family of 2 adults and a 10 month old baby in a 2 bed house with a water meter.
We have just moved to a house with RV and its only £35.00 a month!

Im not sure if its United Utilities thats expensive but we never used silly amounts of water and didnt have a garden at our old property.

Get a cheap water barrel or two

Some water companies fit water saving devices.

Lots of ideas on the internet to save water. Cheaper and greener.

That's a septic tank. A cesspool doesn't drain anywhere so everything has to be pumped out.

Our water is metered and we pay £6.00 per month!! :j (two adults, full time work, no children)

But we are very strict with water use because we have a shared cesspool which costs approx £65.00 a month  to have emptied.

We never use the bath, wash up once a day, use wasing machine one a week, and have very fast showers every other day!!! We do not leave any tapes running, and we don't flush our toilet every time we use it (but I do use quite a lot of bleach!!)

Do I win the prize for lowest water bill?
At £6 a month I think you are the winner. My standing charges alone are about that. From April my standing charges are £32.21 for water, £12.88 for sewerage and £89.21 for surface water drainage. For me it is £11.20 a month and no water usage at all. It is then £1.9132 per cubic metre for water used. I use an average amount at about 50 cubic metres per year for 1 person so my bill is just under £20 a month and I live in one of the cheapest water regions in the UK. South Staffs Water.
    :footie:
:p Regular savers earn 6% interest (HSBC, First Direct, M&S) :p Loans cost 2.9% per year (Nationwide) = FREE money. :p

    Course she's not.

    It's 65+6 = 71 a month.

Which is more than we pay at £50 a month.
