How big? How much ££££ are you planning on spending to save a couple of hundred £ ?

A big MPV may do 50+ on a run but as soon as you hit town/traffic it will be in the 40's or less.

Can you find as suitable vehicle with a 1.6 diesel engine, Thats about as good as your going to get. Fully loaded though it may struggle.

if moneys no object.i think the new vw caravelle 20tdi does around 40mpg urban and 52 extra urban, but think there about 30k
  • think you need to sit down and do some hard research.

    get some manufacturers in mind.

got the model forums e.g transporter forums etc find from owners the hidden costs are likely to be and running costs avoidance of ceretain engines in the range etc.

if your van is running perfect without problems, and you wish to gain MPG as a cost cutting excersize it maybe benefitial to stay put with what you got for now as with all cars you may inherrit problems and falk out cash from the start on remedial work.

have you tried giving you engine more air (forced intake induction kit).
remove the cat but keep it for the future.
    fuel pump and turbo tweaks.
how about an uprated intercooler cooler the air the better.

ive known a few people to go out and get rid of the cat and have a pipe put in its place.
then have the turbo and fuel pump tweaked a bit after looking online for a second hand intercooler to upgrade from the stadard fitted.
put on a forced air intake give the oil breather pipe a better breather filter and or catch tank then have it mapped for performance and seen a good MPG gain driving in their normal manor.

Decat on mine, didn't really notice any difference,

I didnt fit it to improve MPG though. But i can get 50+ on a run.

Considered a remap or a resistor in a box that ups the fuel pressure. But i think all will get is even more wheelspin.

When the turbo is coming in its easy to spin the wheels in the wet. Not what you expect from a diesel.

Thats the type of vehicle I currently have and believe me they don't get anywhere near those figures when loaded.

Yeah I had one as a hire car a wee while back and there was no way it gets anywhere near 50mpg and that was half empty.

I removed the cat on my Subaru and had it mapped.

Went from 225 bhp standard to nearly 300 by increasing the boost, and by managing the fueling to be more efficient.

I didn't see a rise in mpg but importanly, with the extra power I didn't see a fall either.

Also, even without the cat, as the fuel was leaned out (most cars - least petrol ones - run rich to protect the cat) it still passed the emissions test no problem.

    5t.
What if there was no such thing as a rhetorical question?
