I am 39. I have worked full time for 18 years. I recieved 9months of SMP after my baby was born and I have nearly finished 6 months of contr based JSA.
What I want to know is, do you get some allowance for gap in work due to having a child or is that already covered by the time I recieved SMP.
I believe I need 30 years of NI contributions. How many hours a week of work do I have to work so it will contribute towards this, as I have a job offer of 8 hrs on a saturday. Is this enough or is there a minimum no of hours.
thanks

Whilst you are in receipt of child benefit for a child under 12 and some other benefits you will be credited NI contributions. You need to earn £107 per week to be credited with contributions whilst working, £146 pw before you actually pay them.
See here http://www.hmrc.gov.uk/ni/intro/credits.htm
and here http://www.hmrc.gov.uk/rates/nic.htm
Go here https://secure.thepensionservice.gov.uk/statepensionforecast/ and get a state pension forecast and see what you have so far.0 -
thanks, so if I only earn £60 will that not count or will I be expected to make the difference. How does the CB credits side add up. How do i know if I have enough
Do I need to talk to tax people and find out my situation0 -
I don't think it is the tax people, NI is a separate department I think.0

To get a full state pension you need only 30 years contributions.
Easily attainable at your age if you have so many to start with.make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.
and we will never, ever return.0 -
there is a seperate department for NI here is their number
his gives you their phone number

When my contribtion based JSA finshes next month assuming that I am still not working, the job centre said I would still have to sign on to recieve NI contributions and be actively seeking work. If I chose to just work the 8hrs on a saturday and no more the job centre are still going to pester me to find more work up to 16hr threshold.
1. Do I have to keep going fortnightly to sign for the NI cont while my boy is under 12
2. Can they refuse to pay my NI cont if I only want to work 8 hrs a week.

You are getting NI contribs with your CB as if you were a stay at home mom.
If you do not want to work more than 8 hours, and are no longer recieving ANY JSA, then you don't have to work more. You are already getting your NI contribs. Could be the JC people dont' know you have a child?
But check this not here, but on the Benefits forum.
in any case did you go straight to JSA from SMP? Did you get made redundant? Did they choose you because you were on ML (not really allowed to), or did you volunteer?0 -

Prior to having my baby I was on a temp contract which they didnt renew when I finished to have my baby. That is why I didnt get MP but SMP. When my SMP ended I phoned the job centre to ask about NI and they said if I was looking for work as well that I could get up to 6 months Cont based JSA so that is why I signed on. As this it is due to finish in about 6 weeks I just need to know if I have to keep going to job centre just to sign for NI. It is a quite a trek with a little one and hard going when they want me to apply for jobs which are not want I want or fit in with my lifestyle now I have a small one. I want a job that wont compromise my quality time with him. This is prob more than u need to know.
Basically if I can take a weekend job for 8hrs and not compromise my contributions then I will be happy.

Taking a WE job of 8 hours should be fine, if you are not taking any JSA anymore, but are getting NI contribs with your CB you can just carry on. After all, if you look for work and get it, that is the point? No one can force you to work longer than 8 hours if you are not claiming benefits (other than CB).
You can call the DWP for confirmation, but I am sure this is the case.
So your only real work now is to find that WE job?0 -

What is so hard to understand? The questions that get the best answers are the questions that give most detail....0
