British Gas Refund?

I cancelled two direct debits and got standard letters from British Gas saying I've got a credit balance of over £1,400 on my gas and electricity accounts from 2008. I contacted BG to claim that back, and they said they could find no record of those amounts. They've offered £50 compensation for my trouble. What should I do?

Send them a copy of the relavent paperwork. How come you have only just noticed this after four years? That gum you like is coming back in style.0

Are you saying that you left BG back in 2008 but only now cancelled the DD's? What did your final statement at that time say your balance was?
Have they continued to take payments after you left?No free lunch, and no free laptop0 -
They payments stopped and I thought that any credit was transferred to the new suppliers. I don't habitually cancel direct debits, but was just having a clear-out. These letters came as a surprise. I haven't kept the closing statements from when we transferred. These figures must have come from somewhere, even if it's an error and they're referring to someone else's account. I can't believe that their billing system has a random number generator in it.0

No, credits are never transferred (nor are debits) from one supplier to the next.No free lunch, and no free laptop0

It could be an error & that was the credit balance on your account wen you left them in 2008.
If your direct debits were dormant then you haven't paid anything to them so they won't owe you anything.
Check your bank account & if you've paid them each month contact them va the website.0 -
Is the bill you have a copy of an old bill? Is it marked as a final bill? if not it could be a copy of a bill from any point in your history and the credit may since have been used. if it is then a copy of your final bill then the credit should have been refunded. the energy company should still have a record of this but it may have been archived as your going back 4 years.I am an employee of British Gas but all views i write are personal and not a reflection of my employer.0
