Will my credit score affect my partners if we rent?

Hi all,

Me and my partner will be looking to rent together in about a years time. I have terrible credit, my partner has a reasonable credit score. If we were to rent together would my score affect my partners?

Many thanks in advance

No - living together / renting together does not create a financial association on your credit files.

Opening joint bank accounts with overdrafts or having joint loans or a joint mortgage does create a link.

By the way credit scores mean nothing. The score you see is not used by financial institutions.

The credit score you see on Experian is their score on you (which means nothing). Not what any credit checking institute scores you at.

That's why you see people on here moaning about their "perfect" credit score of 999 yet they can't get credit.

Experian are talking about including rental payments in credit scoring, which would link co-tenants. See Martin's blog.

  • Do you have a link for Martins Blog about it?
