Removable car seats & trailer towing

Hello

I have a Kia Sedona that I often run without the back seats in so I can get stuff that is 6ft long in, and it's fine for that.

However I'll shortly need to regualrly tow a trailer instead (not as well) as an internal load. I can work out the max trailer load etc, but am I better popping the seats back in even if I don't need them for people? It's a heavy vehicle to start with but I'm guessing the road handling and balance will be better with seats in.

Thank you

The maximum weight trailer a car can tow is in part based on the weight of the car. If you remove some of the interia which reduces the weight then technically that may reduce the weight you can tow. That said I think it may be based on the published kerbside weight.

Personally I would put them back in.

The better the ratio between the car and the trailer the more stable it will be. The caravan clubs recommend the loaded trailer be no more than 85% of the kerbweight of the car (or 100% for experienced towers).

As said already, It really depends on what your are towing.

Keeping the vehicle heavier than the trailer is a must, But keeping under the cars gross train weight is also a must.

The cars max towing weight maybe less than the gross loaded car weight and max legal towing weight.

So its either less in the car or a lighter trailer.

What weights are you towing? and what year/model/engine is the car?

Another issue is when did you pass your driving test?

Again, depends on the weight you are towing, the current Sedona can tow a braked trailer of 2000kg. If you're nowhere near this I wouldn't bother.
  • Thank you, they'll go back in.
