all in one scanner for slides - please advise

Thanks for reading this post. I'm writing on behalf of a good friend who recently lost her dear dad and who wants to scan and save images from loads of old family transparencies as a bereavement project.
Her old PC has also just died so she will probably replace it with a simple Dell notebook suitable for light use i.e. surfing, email, reading and creating Word and PowerPoint documents. She plans to buy an all-in-one printer/scanner.
What would be the most suitable all-in-one scanner and software for not only the slides project but for straightforward printing and copying as well?Doesn't look like Dell has anything suitable.
She is a completely non-techie ivory tower academic.

I've surfed around after reading through some of the older threads on here about equipment for scanning slides but haven't really spotted any great products as a result.

All constructive suggestions and advice welcome.

Cheers
Tus

We bought the cannon MP810. As we had family slides and wedding films to transfer to digital and to print. It does everything. It has the kitchen sink. It costs an arm and a leg. We got it from Dabs including a full set of replacement inks.

The slides scanning at 4800dpi end up really clear. You can see the dirt on the slide surface. It does 4 at a time in a holder that clips above the scanner glass. The holder is included.

I haven't found fault with it yet apart from the cost.

It will copy photo's, print direct from negative or positive film.

Full slide example resized link (35k).familycd100291smri2.th.jpg

    The scanned 4344 x 5832 Pixels is a 6.7MB jpeg.

All that from a 1" by 1/2" slide.

Also most copy and print from, functions can be done without a PC. It has a screen and controls. Software bundled. We have it attached to a mac.

    Cheers
  • A slide scanner will produce much better results than a flatbed/multi-purpose printer, you can get them new for £60 or so, cheaper second hand.
Ever get the feeling you are wasting your time?

    Albertross is spot on.

After researching all reasonably priced home 35mm film and slide scanners I ordered the Plustek 4700 from Jessops only yesterday.

The family has hundreds of 35mm slides going back years which I plan to convert to jpeg's for easy viewing and secure storage.

If you ring them and tell them you hold a Nectar card they will give you a 10% discount. Only problem is that stock will be two weeks, but at £93 inc delivery I can't complain. Amazon have them at £130, Ebay at £135, so the Jessops deal is great.

The 4700 has been out for about 2 1/2 years but seems to be unbeaten for quality at an acceptable price, when released it retailed at over £200.

Many thanks for the helpful replies albertross, skr00ge and mjr600.

You've convinced me that a slide scanner would be the best solution.
As the slides are in Scotland and my pal is in London, might be good for the slide scanner to be located at her family home to be used when she visits. She can have a simple all-in-one at her own home.
Her mum is in her late 70s but extremely bright and with it, so who knows, she might take on some of the scanning too.

I will show her this thread. Thanks again everyone.
