Hi, I just want to say I hope your little one gets better soon. I would have had to do the same today but I'm ill aswell. So for me that should come under sick leave. I know of someone who has phoned in ill even when it was her child who was sick so she didn't have to use her holiday. It's not being honest I know.

I work for an LA and the dependency leave is unpaid, there is no obligation on the employer to pay you. In our LA managers are allowed to authorise upto 2 weeks unpaid leave if you have to care for a dependent - includes taking them to medical appointments. Anything above this has to be authorised by HR.

I only work part-time and as my DD is school age I rejig my days or work a full week the next week if she is ill and I have no leave.

  • I work in the NHS and I have to make the time up or take it as annual leave. My daughter had chicken pox 3 weeks after I first started and I had to have 10 days off!! I work part time though, so to make up the time I just worked a couple of extra days.

I must be lucky with my contract then. I know I can have paid days off, it was the same when I worked in an LA. Sorry for wrong info op, I had assumed that because I got paid by LA that all staff did.
  • I have a child with chronic health problems. I only work 18 hours a week as she is always ill or needing to go to hospital for various check ups. My teenage daughter as also joined the club so now I have double appointments. When my youngest one is ill, I stay at home and then go to work at 4pm when her much older sisters come home. I then make up the rest of the time by working the days I don`t normally work. I end up chasing my tail in the winter months as she is worse then. I did have a manager who got fed up with it about 6months ago so I changed sections and so far so good. I was also given 2 years unpaid leave when she was too ill for me to be at work and I know that if it was that bad again they would let me have unpaid leave. I can`t complain really.

Most good employers will be understanding for genuine cases. Unfortunately some people abuse the "privedge" and ruin it for us all.
