sick days with child

I am a single mum, my daughter is 8 years old. I work for the local council and am enjoying my job. My daughter has had to have a few days off sick and I have to take holiday for it. Is this correct?

It is unfair, you can't win can you. You work hard, but loose all your holiday time to daughter having tummy bug or whatever is floating around the school.

I have a child minder who has her after school but can't have her on sick days. I don't have family near by who can help.

    Send her to school then.
As a PowerSeller, I never leave feedback first. The reason I do this is because I know how much it winds the people on the forums up...
  • I hope your daughter is better now.

Having to take leave when children are ill is just part of being a parent.

Does your Council work on flexitime? If so you could build some flexitime up and use that.

Imagine someone holding forth on biology whose only knowledge of the subject is the Book of British Birds, and you have a rough idea of what it feels like to read Richard Dawkins on theology: Terry Eagleton

Agree with seven day weekend. Part and parcel of being a parent I'm afraid. Can you imagine the outcry if you were given 'free' days annual leave because your child was sick? How would the non parents feel about that?

I'd recommend that you check your employment contract. Some include a certain number of paid days that can be taken off per year to deal with dependants' illness etc., but others do not. My current contract has no flexibility, so I must either make up the time or take it as unpaid leave, but in other jobs, I've been able to take up to (5? - can't remember now) days paid per year when the children were ill.

  • The company i work for allow 5 child days per year to be taken if a child ,or other family member is ill. This does not count as holidays.

Apart from the one silly response (obviously a person with no kids), THANK YOU ALL SO MUCH. I think i was just hoping, but in my heart i knew. Just thank goodness my DD isn't a sickly child.

    THANKS

The other optioin would be to offer to work, but that you would have to do it from home on that occasion. I am so thankful that I am in the job that I am, and if the kids are off they come to work with me, if they are ill - I stay at home with them!
