TEFL courses

I think before you do the course, you need to decide where it is you want to work, and what exactly you want to be doing. If you want to make a career out of it, then its probably a good idea to do those intense courses such as CELTA, but if you are thinking of just taking a few years out to travel and work at the same it might not be necessary.
I am working in Korea at the moment and they favour people with some sort of TEFL course, but they don't actually seem to care where the certificate came from. So I did a cheap online course, which certainly wasn't hard, 120 hours, for £200 but I have friends who did the real, intensive courses, which cost over £1000. Yes they have a better qualification, but we both get paid the same amount of money here and I dont plan on doing this as a career, so it was not worth my while investing in a proper course.0 -

You could try applying for a career development loan (CDL).0 -
I got the weekend one not really worth the paper it's printed on in my opinion. Having said that i have known people on the course who went on to get work but its very restrictive whereas the intensive course pretty much opens doors anywhere so it's all down to your motivations.
Go to TEFL.com where jobs are advertised and see what the countries you are interested in are asking for...0 -
I have an English degree, PGCE and have taught secondary English in the UK for 20-odd years (KS3, GCSE, A level). I'd always presumed I'd need to do a TEFL course if I wanted to work abroad in anything other than an international school teaching English exam board courses. Am I right, and if so, what would be the 'sure fire, this qualification will be recognised and is the one you want' course to do?Reason for edit? Can spell, can't type!0

Hi,
If you did want to do a TEFL course, it may be good to do an online one so that you can offer that as proof in certain countries to teach English?
I've been given an 80% off code from the company I did my online course with at TEFL express.
If you fancy it, then click on below link http
/ www. teflexpress.co.uk/buddy120hour/120_hour_Advanced_TEFL_Course and enter the discount code: Buddy1128582584 then you can claim the money off.
Hope this helps0 -
